Whimsical Waves and Soothing Sand: Fort De Soto Beach

Posted by admin on Feb 17, 2009 in Beach Fun

Want to get away? Many people flock to Florida’s Fort De Soto Beach, unaware that it was America’s number one beach in 2005.

Fort DeSoto for many, is a favorite family fun location. Although it is perfectly pleasant for those traveling with a group of friends or even in solitude.

Kathryn Davis, a college student and resident of Florida has spent a long time navigating the Central Florida area for the best beaches and deems Fort De Soto as the perfect beach.

“I love this beach because it has a little bit of everything”, Kathryn said. “You can go canoing, biking, kayaking, fishing, and even camping”!

Additionally, Fort Desoto offers three beach locations.

”I prefer the north side because it offers a national park” Kathryn said. Visitors can also use the grilling area to create favorite beach-side suppers. There are also restrooms complete with showers eliminating tracking that luxurious sand into your car.The Fort also offers a variety of trails to explore either on foot or to blaze on bikes. There also food stands nearby for those who prefer to travel without the cooler.

The quality of the sand and water are top-notch ensuring for every sea-splashing vacationer a delightful visit. The blue-green waters offset the pristine white sandy shoreline allowing you to totally let go of mounting stresses.

“It’s great because Fort De Soto is not overpopulated” Kathryn Davis added. No one enjoys having to share the beach with a hundreds of others. This is not ideal for even a day-cation. can enjoy the joys of the beach but do so along with the rest of the world. However, it is not ideal vacationing. And because of this well kept secret, there is always ample parking ensuring that you won’t have to scorch your feet, trekking across the black top road all the way from Section Z.

“This is also a very safe beach”, Kathryn Davis mentioned. The area and facilities are clean and beach is clear of polution.

Lagoons are also unique to the north side of the beach. Passing through this shallow sea water makes for a fun adventure. It is the only way to get to the actual beach. Children like to take their pails and shovels for a dive in the not so murky waters of the lagoon. People search for seashells while others opt to just wade around. The lagoon is almost like a little river. It is not only beautiful to look at, fun to play in, but also creates an illusion of two beaches.

Kathryn Davis also felt that the best time to visit Fort DeSoto is in the Fall.

”Naturally, the Gulf Waters heat up all throughout the summer and so when the air and outside temperature start getting cooler, the ocean makes you feel like you are taking a nice, soothing, and relaxing bath”, said Davis.

“The Fort was a little disappointing. I compared it to many other large civil war sites like Gettysburg. It has history but doesn’t appear to be extravagant. And this is because the rooms have been emptied and don’t provide substantial information of the events” said Davis. The Fort is a good place to let the children explore and cool off from all the sunbathing.

Despite the lack of extravagance of the Fort, Davis considers Fort DeSoto to have no real cons. And even though it is a little bit of a drive, it is well worth it.

“I never consider traveling to Fort De Soto as a hassle. When I think of the perfect beach, I think that I want to go to Fort De Soto”, Kathryn Davis added excitedly.
