Character Matters

An outcry swept the nation when Barack Obama called the citizens of Pennsylvania bitter, turning to their guns and religion in their bitterness.

The media immediately began covering the story and showcasing some people’s feelings on the comments made by Obama.

“Mr. Obama is not a hapless victim. His comments made for just the sort of rookie error that the Illinois senator is prone to make, and they have reinforced a feeling that he can be too aloof, or, yes, elitist.” (Editorial, “Guns And Bitter,” The New York Times, 4/16/08)

The VIA Institute recently released a study on the character of the candidates. Some believe that character will be paramount in this pivotal election in Novemeber.

“The results indicate the character profiles that the candidates have conveyed so far. Their challenge now is to ‘fill in the blanks’ in terms of additional character strengths that the public wants to see in the next president,” said Dr. Neal H. Mayerson, Chairman, VIA Institute on Character.

In the study on character, Obama was listed as the candidate with the most social intelligenece, greatest level of kindness and understanding of people’s feelings, and open-mindedness.

The nation will decide in November if these results are accurate.
