Fox in Flight

Pteropus!

Sounds like a scary prehistoric octopus or something, doesn’t it?
Fear not, unless the world’s largest species of bats gets your skin crawling!

The flying fox is not a fox at all; rather, it’s the name for the many species of the world’s largest bats!

Flying foxes are different from most other bats.  They have fairly large eyes for their relative body size, and do not rely on echolocation for navigation and finding food. They have excellent vision, and use it to their advantage! As if that’s not cool enough, some species of the flying fox can grow so big that their wingspan reaches five feet!

Cue the Kiwi!

by Silver Gummi Shark on Feb.11, 2009, under Dry Land

So, have you ever heard of a kiwi?

Well…yes, there’s the fruit called a kiwi, which looks a little something like…this.

This one can't fly, either.
This one can’t fly, either.

…but there is also a BIRD called a kiwi!
Kiwis can’t fly. Neither can their fruit counterparts.  But kiwi birds are definitely more endagered by comparison. They are native to New Zealand, and are its national bird. They’re roughly the size of your average farm chicken, and can lay the biggest egg compared to relative body size! If you thought it was hard having a baby, try pushing out an egg almost half your size!

 Egg to Bird comparison. Whoa.

YIKES!

Here’s a video of a cute little kiwi coming out to explore at the forest’s edge.
